Curriculum

A 60-minute asynchronous module (consisting of interactive videos) on the following topics:

• Epidemiology
• SUD diagnosis
• Structural determinants predisposing to SUD
• Screening and brief intervention (SBIRT)
• Motivational interviewing
• Overdose prevention and risk mitigation
• Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of SUD

A 2-part, 2-hour simulation with a standardized patient with interprofessional (medical, nursing, and pharmacy) students.

• Part 1: The patient has 'at risk drinking' without a use disorder. The goals are for the students to recognize that the patient's alcohol use is above healthy norms, inform the patient this, and conduct a brief intervention on their alcohol use.
• Part 2: It is now a year later and the patient has an alcohol use disorder (AUD). The goals are for the students to recognize and diagnose an AUD, disclose the diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan including medication and non-medication options.

Students are given feedback by the standardized patient as well as facilitations who observed the interaction in a control room.

An optional clinical elective for senior students who are interested in a deeper dive into and a possible future career in SUD in the following clinics:
